The end of our 3 year transition to an organic farm in Scotland

It is with great pride for us to announce the recent completion of our three-year transition period to an organic farm in Scotland. The demand for organic meat in Scotland is growing tremendously. The public want to see more sustainable farming methods to protect the future of our planet. That’s why we are proud to be able to offer premium end products to all of our customers.

We wanted to be able to sell organic beef and lamb from the farm. The reason for this is that we were keen to not have artificial fertilisers or pesticides on the farm. Essentially, we also wanted to improve the soil structure and to make our farm more sufficient as well as being more environmentally friendly.

Excitingly, we have planted seed barley which will generate our first organic harvest in the Autumn.  The farm is looking swell without the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticide sprays. So, we’re delighted to offer some of the finest beef and lamb from our organic farm in Scotland.

Nonetheless, the weather hasn’t been kind over the last two weeks. However, we have been sowing and the seed has burst and is popping through the soil. The main reason to sow later is to give the grain as much chance of beating the weeds as possible.  Therefore, we will use a rake over the ground once the crop is established. This will help to clear the weeds as they come through in between the rows of grain. This will allow the grain to thicken and then minimise weed growth.

This year’s crop is a big year for grass on the farm and we will hopefully be taking our first cut in the next few weeks to store and feed the cattle and deer over the winter.   All the cows and young calves are outside with the ewes and lambs all enjoying the grass that has really greened up over the last week.  We are also hoping to see some deer calves being born soon.

An exciting new beginning for Downfield farm

Making the transition to an organic farm in Scotland has been an exciting journey for us. Downfield is one of the few organic farms in Scotland. We’re changing the way we do things and want to give something back to the environment. Moreover, we are delighted to be able to offer our Downfield farm customers some of the juiciest and most delicious organic meat that Scotland has to offer. Organic meat is far fresher, healthier fats and more beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids.
