All About Us

Ahead of the Game

Welcome to Downfield Farm, abattoir, butchery, and producers of Stagison Venison. Here we pride ourselves in our reputable, humane abattoir and custom butchery. As such, we are Scotland’s only field to fork venison farm, handling, and meat processing facility. Whatsmore, since being established in the Spring of 2016, our family-run farm is herding in a new dawn for meat processing.

As farmers ourselves, we know first hand the hard work our customers put into raising their animals.  So, we consider it a privilege to continue that work with the highest quality local slaughter and processing possible.

We are fully licensed by FSS (Food Standards Scotland) as an abattoir and cutting plant and a QMS (Quality Meat Scotland) assured processor.

Born and Bred Farmers

A Forking Good Idea

Born into traditional farming families, we are no strangers to the hard work of day-to-day farming. So, in 2002, we bought Downfield Farm just outside of Cupar, Fife, with the hope of expanding our beef and sheep farming business.

As the demand for farmed venison continued to grow, we decided to add venison farming to our business. But with the only venison abattoir in South Yorkshire, the cost of transporting deer across the country was deer indeed. As such, the whole process would also put a lot of additional stress on our deer, which we really didn’t like. So we decided to do things differently and convert an old farm shed into our very own processing plant, which now caters for a lot more than just deer. And now, we also process sheep and goat as well as butchering cattle and pigs.

The Vision is Born

Herding an New Era

On that fateful day, we entered into a new, exciting and growing market and we hope to challenge and change the perception of venison farming in Scotland for the better.

What’s more, all our hard work is paying off. We have a well-earned reputation for excellence in animal nutrition, care and processing in the industry. We are also working hard with local farmers and suppliers to encourage the growth of venison farming in Scotland, and in turn the growth of our economy, by supplying quality venison products to the rest of the UK (and who knows, maybe one day to the rest of the world). Furthermore, we also offer a private butchery service for Wild & Farmed Deer, Cattle, Sheep, Goats and Pigs.

Butcher Shop

Come and have a Butchers

Buying and trying our delicious meat just got so much easier. Find us at 8 Main Street in Ceres, Fife at Ceres Butchers. We took over ownership of this wonderful local shop in 2019 so that we can sell our venison locally and introduce many more people to its delights. Led by shop manager David Noble and his knowledgable team, they can help find the perfect cut of meat for your dinner.

Not only do we sell delicious deer meat from our venison farm, but we also stock everything else you would expect from a butcher shop, like our own Scotch beef and lamb. We are also proud stockists of locally sourced pork and freshly made haggis, pies and puddings. If you are looking for delicious meat, then pop along and fill your basket!

The Future is Organic

Here’s Looking at Coo

From 2019, we’ve been working hard to make Downfield Farm fully organic. This ongoing process should be completed in 2021, but until then we are taking all the steps necessary to ensure all the meat and produce here is produced in a 100% organic manner.

All our deer, Black Galloway cattle and Manx Loaghtan sheep are already raised in a happy and healthy environment. They have loads of outdoor space and eat a natural diet. We don’t use chemical fertilisers or pesticides on any of our crops either. It’s a long road to become certified organic, and every step of production must pass inspection before it happens. We are committed to achieving this goal with the support of our phenomenal team here on the farm. Follow our journey on our venison farm and stay up to date with us at Downfield on our Facebook page!
